Chapter 12
Pain is No Longer Pleasure
I saw Marcus in Magic City one night with a few of his friends and widely known groupies from Miami. He walked past me as if he’d never known who I was. We’d redeveloped a friendship that had grown past the relationship we’d had years ago. I was finally able to love him just as a friend and not think of him in another way. He had traveled back and forth to Atlanta quite a few times and we’d link up to hang out every time he was there, but now it was as if he and I had never known each other at all.
I couldn’t understand why all of a sudden I was being rejected and ignored. His actions offended me to the point that I felt I needed to address him and get to the bottom of it. He had suddenly forgotten how to speak, and I had suddenly remembered how much pain I felt when he had broken things off and disappeared years ago. I thought of all the things that I could have possibly done wrong, but none of them applied.
Standing in front of him, I demanded that he acknowledge me. “Really, Marcus? So you’re going to act as if you don’t know me now?”
“I heard you got me in a book,” were his only words to me.
I knew instantly that Spec, a former group member of his, had said something to him about it. Aside from my close friends, Spec and the other guys in the group were the only ones who knew about my book. One day I was with Sharita as she took her son to Spec’s house. We were all there hanging out and a friend of ours had pulled out the book. In the midst of all the commotion, we left, but the book didn’t leave with us. I’m assuming it was read and a phone call was made.
“Spec called me and told me about that shit,” he confirmed. The boys always had a way of amplifying things and making things out to be more than what they really were, so I could only imagine what Spec had told him. The look in Marcus’s eyes was as if he wanted to fight me. But Marcus had never seen the book, nor did he know what was in it.
“I don’t know why they made things seem worse than what they are, but if you would like a copy of the book to see what’s what, then I can give you a copy.”
“Nah, I’m good. If I want the book, I’ll go out to get it myself. Show you some kind of support,” he said.
He then turned around to continue entertaining his arm piece for that night, but his response wasn’t good enough for me. I turned around to stand in front of him once more, not giving a damn about the bitch that was standing next to him. I knew if something popped off, she’d be a done deal.
